G. Clifton Pennell (Cliff) is founder and President of STONEBREAKER LLC, a Strategic Services Company based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. STONEBREAKER provides strategic consulting to such clients as Childress Ventures, DataScan, PlayCore International and NASCAR. In addition, STONEBREAKER is or has worked on a collaborative partnership basis with businesses, including Chartwell Investments and Powell-Tate.
Prior to starting his own business, Pennell spent more than twenty years with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJR) where he served in many different capacities throughout sales, marketing and corporate strategy and was a member of the company's executive committee. Among those positions he held at RJR were Senior Vice President - Marketing and Senior Vice President - Business Strategy. Pennell also served as President of Sports Marketing Enterprises, a division of RJR and one of the largest event marketing companies in the nation. Pennell's accomplishments at RJR were far reaching. He was responsible for evolving the repositioning of the Camel brand via the Joe Camel character and repositioned / reintroduced the Doral brand to become the second largest selling cigarette brand in the country. Pennell also initiated a private label / contract manufacturing division of RJR to not only deliver volume, but meet important strategic needs for the company's more profitable full price brands. He also led several new brand and business start-up initiatives such as Moonlight Tobacco Company and Smoker's Option.
Among his many business accomplishments and recognitions, Pennell has been named one of the most influential people in motorsports by Racer Magazine & That's Racin. He has been a speaker at numerous seminars, conferences, and educational institutions on topics ranging from general business strategy to optimizing sponsorships. STONEBREAKER's "Strategic Management Process"sm, developed by Pennell, is considered by many to be one of the most disciplined and reliable strategic frameworks available.
